COVID 19 Virus

The Yarmouth School Department school closure in response to the threat of COVID-19 is being extended until Monday, April 27. This decision is based on the fact that the Maine Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has identified Cumberland County as an area experiencing “community transmission” of the disease and the US CDC and Maine Department of Education both recognize that longer school closures may be necessary to slow the spread of this novel coronavirus.

Educators throughout the district will continue to communicate with families and students as they have done during this first week of school closure.  Distance learning will continue each weekday through Thursday, April 16, at which point the spring break will begin as scheduled and continue until we return to school on April 27.  We will evaluate the wisdom of an April 27 return date during the week of April 20.

During this extended closure, it remains critical that we continue to limit in-person social interactions and practice good personal hygiene – the two most effective measures for reducing the spread of the disease.  As Superintendent Dolloff stated in an earlier memo, please assist in this effort by avoiding non-essential travel and visits with others.  Students should not be gathering or socializing in groups large or small, but should remain connected to one another through electronic mediums to minimize the effects of isolation.

Thanks to tremendous efforts by staff members, and with support from organizations such as Yarmouth Cares About Neighbors (YCAN) and the Yarmouth Education Foundation (YEF), we have put many structures in place to assist families during this time. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance in any way (instruction, technology access, food security, social-emotional or physical health) we encourage you to reach out to teachers or school principals so we may provide or suggest resources for assistance.
