Fall Sports Update
August 19, 2020
Today, the York and Cumberland County superintendents voted to delay the start of the high school fall sports season until Tuesday, September 8. This date represents the official start date the MPA announced in July. We are awaiting word from the MPA on the status of the Fall Sports Season and what it may look like.
As we await updated guidelines from the MPA, please know that we are committed to providing our student-athletes with programming this fall. Even if the number of games against other schools is greatly reduced, or eliminated altogether in certain sports, we will provide those student-athletes with sport-specific training, skills development, and experiences to help fill the void of competitions.
The Yarmouth School Department (YSD) is working diligently to ensure we can get our academic and athletic year started properly. YSD cannot risk a further delay to the start of the school year by holding athletic programming on school grounds for two weeks prior to the start of school (MPA Phase 4 summer conditioning program). By delaying until September 8th, YSD can focus on starting the school year and ensure that we can begin on that date without fear of contamination occurring through our own sports programs prior to that.
With MPA guidance due to arrive late next week, we will be able to start our sports seasons with a full understanding of what the season will look like. This will allow us to use a comprehensive plan for sports that may have reduced or canceled interscholastic seasons. Each school system will determine if they are going to operate under MPA phasing guidelines, Community
Sports guidelines, or follow the Maine DOE Physical Education guidelines.
Please note that we will be holding our Fall Sports Information Night on Monday, August 24th @ 7:00 p.m. Our Athletic Director and Fall Head Coaches will provide updated information as well as answer questions athletes and their parents may have. Here is the link to the Zoom meeting:
