October 30th Parent Note

Friday, October 30, 2020

Dear YHS Families,

In addition to Wednesday’s snow showers, we face a flurry of events and information in the next few weeks.  Please take a few moments to review the following important  events as we look ahead to November.

Election Day at YHS November 3 - no onsite classes

A reminder that this year’s elections will be held at Yarmouth High School on Tuesday, November 3rd and there will be no students on campus on this day.  Students will have a “remote” day of learning, and will be expected to report online to their regularly scheduled classes from 8 to 2 pm.

There will still be food service available for YHS students. Parents should contact Blair Currier via email (blair_currier@yarmouthschools.org) to coordinate when students may still pick a school breakfast or lunch.

End of the First Quarter - Friday, November 6th

Students should take care of their academic responsibilities as the quarter draws to an end; please take time to review your student’s progress in PowerSchool and email your student’s teachers if you have any questions or concerns.

Learning Area Conferences

Yarmouth’s version of parent-teacher conferences will be held online from November 16th through November 23rd.   Each of your student’s teachers will be reaching out to you with more information regarding when and how they will meet with you online (a reminder that you do not need to meet with your student’s study hall teachers).

Student Absences & Parent Communication for Classes

Even on remote days, please make sure that you call the office (846-5535) if your student will not be able to attend online classes.  Our teachers will continue to keep track of attendance of our online students, and they will be marked absent unless we receive parent notification. In addition, students are asked to attend their classes in person on their assigned cohort days.  If they will be unable to attend their classes on site, parents should also call the office (846-5535).

Student Dismissal

A reminder that parent/guardian permission is required for any student dismissal.  When dismissing students, please call our main office at 846-5535.

Laptop Care

With increased use of laptops at home, please make sure your student keeps all food and beverages away from the laptop.  The damages related to liquid spills are not only costly, they often result in a complete loss of the device.

Picture retakes

Please see this link if you are interested in retakes for your child’s school pictures, which will be held on November 14th.

Holiday Meals & Project Holiday

Once again, the Yarmouth Community Food Pantry will be providing meals to families in need.  If you are interested, please use this link here to sign up for this meal program.  Project Holiday is a program coordinated by Yarmouth Cares about Neighbors (YCAN) with assistance from YCS, Yarmouth Food Pantry, and the Lions Club. The goal of this program is to enhance the holiday spirit of giving in theYarmouth community by connecting anonymous donors with Yarmouth families who confidentially request assistance.   Please see this link for more information about Project Holiday.

Senior Yearbook Ads are due November 6th.  Please see this link regarding additional Class of 2021 yearbook information.

CASCO BAY CAN Substance Abuse Virtual Discussion

Join Casco Bay CAN as they facilitate a virtual discussion on talking with teens about substance use. They will share local trends in substance use, how to look for signs of use, and protective factors that influence youth to make positive choices. As we know, youth are experiencing more stress than ever before and some are self-medicating with misuse of substances such as alcohol, marijuana, or prescription drugs. Join in a virtual discussion on Thursday, October 29th from 6:30-7:45 pm by clicking on the link below or dialing in. The session is FREE and open to anyone interested in learning more.

Please join my meeting from your computer, tablet or smartphone.

Royal River Books Supporting Our Schools

Royal River Books is supporting Yarmouth School Libraries with special open days in November. You may purchase books, unique gifts, cards, calendars, puzzles, holiday items and more with 20% of all sales benefiting the respective library. Sales on Sunday, November 22 from 10am to 5pm will benefit the YHS Library. Please see this Link here for details.

In his district wide message sent earlier today, Superintendent Dolloff recognized the efforts of our students, parents, and faculty to successfully navigate through the challenges of COVID.   Although our high school students may no longer participate in traditional Trick of Treat Halloween activities, we would ask for your efforts to ensure that we continue to work together to limit any large group gatherings as the holiday season is nearly upon us.  Be well, and be safe.

Respectfully,

Eric Klein, Amy Bongard, and David Creech - YHS Administrative Team
