March 12, 2021

 Dear HMS Families,

Our Civil Rights Team is pleased to share the plan to celebrate Women’s History Month!

The team will help our school community celebrate women in history by hosting two mornings of "Let's Greet the Day with the Voices of Women." Team members will welcome students to school on March 25th and 26th with music by artists identifying as female, as well as posters about some notable women. Here's to celebrating creative spirit and achievements of women everywhere!

We are grateful to the HMS Civil Rights Team, co-advisors Charlotte Agell and Steph Hill, along with the other staff members who support these students with their essential work!

Thank you for taking some time to review the other adventures in learning noted below.

Congratulations to Oliver Brown!

After two challenging rounds of spelling and vocabulary, Oliver Brown (grade 6) is the winner of the 2021 Cumberland County Spelling Bee! Although a few have come close, we have never had a HMS student earn a spot in the Maine Spelling Bee. Congrats and good luck to Ollie! Thanks to Molly Kilpatrick for making our participation in the virtual bee possible.

Oliver Brown:

Thanks to HMS Librarian Brandie Burrows for creating this choice board and library collection to celebrate Women's History Month. We hope you will take some time to peruse these resources as a family. Enjoy!

CAN is collaborating with Freeport Community Services, Freeport Middle School, and the Bradley Family Foundation to host a virtual screening of Like. Like is a national documentary that explores the impact of social media on youth and the effects of technology on the brain. The goal of the film is to inspire and help equip us to self-regulate. Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care. But, is that what's really happening? And, how does social media create or exacerbate anxiety, stress, and depression? The film is appropriate and engaging for teachers, parents, middle school and high school students, and anyone interested in youth mental health. This 55 min. documentary and panel discussion will provide tools, resources, and hope. Join us on Tuesday, March 16th at 6:30 pm for a FREE virtual live event film showing and panel discussion.  Pre-registration is required, please click on the link below to register. Space is limited so please register ASAP to reserve your spot. Register here: Register FMI: trailer and link to the discussion guide and resources.
